The Making of a Bespoke Dining Table

Extendable bespoke dining table

Our clients had some specific requirements for the Dining Room of their home and needed to not to take up excessive space with a very large table – preferring a six seater solution the majority of the time. However, on occasion, the table would need to comfortably seat eight people.

As the client did not want to store extension leaves separate to the table itself, our design team faced the challenge of accommodating the extension within its base. The challenge was made even more complex when our client requested an 8mm glass top to the table in its compact format.

Our solution was to design a folding extension leaf that stowed within the pedestal base of the table. For ease of operation the leaf travelled along guide channels, with its weight supported by an assisted lift platform beneath the leaf. The extension opens like the wings of a butterfly and drops into place, before locating pins connect it to the main table top. The central leaf is designed in a complementary painted lacquer and its thickness is increased by 8mm to see the level of the parted glass tops.

The flame walnut veneer of the table top and the inset ‘champagne’ brass trims are both striking, yet timeless.
