Artisans of Venetian Plaster

Luxury and texture

Venetian plaster, or polished plaster, is a material that has been used for centuries to decorate the interiors of palaces and grand buildings. Originating in Venice during the Renaissance period, it is made from a mixture of marble dust, slaked lime, pigments and water. The plaster is known for its durability, beauty, and depth, and is a timeless, elegant choice for a luxury home.

A traditional Venetian plaster is mixed in specific ratios and the mixture is then allowed to mature for several months. This process, known as “ripening,” creates a more stable and workable plaster that can be applied in several thin layers using a trowel. Modern chemical agents speed up the ripening process, but the technique of application has remained unchanged for centuries.

The application of Venetian plaster requires skill and precision. Our experts apply each layer evenly, ensuring that there are no bubbles or imperfections. The surface is then polished to achieve its signature smooth, glossy finish. The result is a stunning, durable, and long-lasting material that brings sophistication and style.

It’s also suitable in a variety of spaces. The Bonham & Bonham team have recently applied polished plaster in bathrooms, to the front of a cocktail bar, in massage and therapy room and in swimming pools, where papered finish wouldn’t be suitable but variation and texture was desirable.

We are passionate about creating beautiful and unique spaces that reflect our clients’ vision and personality. Venetian plaster is just one of the many finishes we use to achieve this.
