SPRING FORWARD AND MAKE IT HAPPEN
With Spring in the air, it’s time to think about moving house – time for a Spring Cleaning. Putting your home on the market is a big step and finding the right estate agent is important. But so too is ensuring that your property is the very best it can be.
First impressions are vital. A potential buyer will have made up their mind even before entering your home. Here are some ideas for helping things to go well.
Mow the grass, trim the hedge, fix fencing, sweep the path. Repaint the front door and place a pair of planted pots on either side.
If you have a parking space move your car to let your purchaser use it. Make it as easy as possible for your buyer. Arriving stressed, late or hot and bothered will make them feel uptight and negative.
REPAIR Fix that dripping tap and tighten the loose door handle. Make sure all light bulbs are working and that the cracked tile is replaced.
Thoroughly clean each room from top to bottom. Clean windows, carpets and mirrors and mop the floor. Hoover, dust and polish; under, around and behind. Nobody wants to buy someone else’s dirt.
TIDY & DECLUTTER
Pick up everything from the floor that shouldn’t be there; a clear area will make the space look larger and more appealing. Put away all you can into cupboards and drawers. Get rid of clutter. Anything on show such as book shelves should be neat. It’s a great opportunity to clear out all that stuff ready for your move.
Refresh paintwork and redecorate the interior décor in subtle neutral colours that have mass appeal and are easy to live with.
Maximise the lighting, and place a vase of fresh flowers nearby. Simple and welcoming. If you have a coat rack or boot stand check that’s it’s not crowded or overflowing. Leaving doorways open to other rooms will increase the feeling of space.
MAXIMUM IMPACT ROOMS
Kitchen & Bathroom.
Every surface should be sparkling and the rooms smell good. Open the windows and let the fresh air flow. In the kitchen do a quick update with new cupboard handles. A bathroom will benefit from neatly folded crisp new towels, coloured, if you like, with matching accessories. Inexpensive but effective.
Remove on a temporary basis what you can such as bedding or litter trays and get rid of animal smells. It’s a big turn off to potential buyers.
Personal mementoes, collections of framed photographs, children’s drawings, sports trophies. All these things make a home – but allow your potential purchasers to imagine themselves in your space. Hide away the “ Me” items for a while.
